The One Gift that Keeps on Giving

It’s Mother’s Day and here’s the only flower you need. This symbol is the gift that keeps on giving — read on to see why!

I am well aware that while Mother’s Day is a cause for great celebration for some, it brings up some very sticky feelings for others. So I wanted to begin this email with an idea that I’ve long been nourished by:

Awareness practice – and the awake-ness that it carries us towards – is the Mother of Us All.

Awake-ness – our intrinsic nature – will always mother us. It mothers us back to ourselves when the mind gets caught in ruts. It mothers us when the second arrow of mentally-conjured suffering pulls us into its sticky little webs. It mothers us morning, noon, and night.

But we are not always able to access our intrinsic awake-ness. Our essential nature is often occluded. So perhaps it’s better to regard practice as the mother of us all. The consistent return to the ritual of remembrance, which ultimately delivers us back to true nature, IS the mother.

I hope you can take refuge in that today, wherever this day finds you.

Whatever you may be facing today, may you remember that the mother of us all is practice, and our essential awake-ness.

Remember that the lotus grows from the mud. No mud, no lotus. This is a symbol for the capacity we each have to blossom open, in spite of and even because of the muddy karmas we carry. The lotus is the symbol of possibility, and the reminder of practice. That lotus is more precious that the most magnificent bouquet. That remembrance is the ultimate mind-changing, and truly the gift that keeps on giving.
